Class Promotions

Five promotions: at levels 15, 40, 70, 100 and 110, from your own class master at the Promotion Centre. Each one costs attribute points you must already have, and (from level 40) an item that is consumed. Two of them hand you a weapon or a suit of armour.

Your level says how far you have walked. Your promotion tier says how far you have come — it is the rank your class master recognises, and it is what separates a level-70 character who did the work from a level-70 character who only killed things.

Nothing promotes you automatically. You go and ask.

Where to promote

Go to the Promotion Centre and find the master of your own class: the Trojan Master, the Warrior Master, the Archer Master, or — for Taoists — Taoist Star or Taoist Moon. A Trojan Master will not promote a Warrior. Taoists have two masters, and which one you choose at level 40 decides the rest of your life (see below).

Talk to your master and pick "I want to be promoted". If you are short of anything, the dialog says exactly what is missing.

The five gates

2nd405 EuxeniteOre + attributes
3rd701 Emerald + attributes
4th1001 Meteor + attributes
5th1101 MoonBox + attributes

Where the items come from:

  • EuxeniteOre — mined in the Mine Cave under Twin City (about one swing in twenty). Roughly five minutes with a pickaxe.
  • Emerald — dropped by HillMonsterL73 in the desert around Desert City, about one kill in twenty.
  • Meteor — drops from any monster anywhere; the higher its level, the likelier. You will almost certainly own one by level 100 without hunting for it.
  • MoonBox — the reward of the Eight-Diagram Tactics quest. Start it early; it is a long one.

The attributes you must already have

These are base attributes — what you have spent, not what your gear adds. Spend nothing at random if you are heading for a promotion.

What each promotion gives you

Every class, from the level-70 promotion onwards — you take less damage from monsters. 5% less at the level-70 promotion, 8% at level 100, 10% at level 110. It is a straight cut off the blow, so it helps a bare Taoist exactly as much as a Warrior behind a wall of plate. Type /stat to see your tier and your current ward.

At the level-40 promotion your master hands you your class's signature weapon, and it is not an ordinary one:

  • Trojan / Warrior — a Cutlass that carries poison: your blows sometimes leave the target burning.
  • Archer — a ScarletBow with both sockets already open. Bring gems.
  • Taoist — an EndBacksword that drinks mana back out of every landed hit.

At the level-110 promotion your master hands you your class's armour, with a socket open.

Make room in your bag before you promote — a full bag forfeits the gift, and the dialog warns you first.

Trojans also gain health at every tier (about 15% more by the last one), and Taoists gain mana in great steps — a fully promoted Taoist carries six times the mana of an unpromoted one. Warriors and Archers get their strength from the weapon, the armour and the ward.

Taoists: the fork at level 40

The level-40 promotion is where a Taoist stops being a generic Taoist and becomes one of two:

  • Water Taoist — healing, resurrection, and the buffs that keep a team alive.
  • Fire Taoist — the offensive line: Fire, Tornado, Volcano.

The master you promote with is the choice. Taoist Star teaches Water; Taoist Moon teaches Fire. After the fork, each master will only teach you their own path's skills — the basics stay open to both. The one way back is a rebirth.

After the last promotion

Once you are fully promoted at level 110, the next milestone is the first rebirth — you start again at level 15 and keep the strength you earned. A rebirth resets your tier, so you promote all over again; the gates are the same, and so are the gifts.
